Directive No. 2012/18/EU of July 4, 2012
Directive 2012/18/EU of July 4, 2012 concerning the control of major accident hazards involving hazardous substances has been published. This directive replaces directive no. 96/82/EC of 9 December 1996 known as the “Seveso II directive” in order to maintain and improve the level of protection of human health and the existing environment. In addition, account had to be taken of the changes made to the classification system for substances and mixtures by Regulation EC No 1272/2008 of 16 December 2008 on the classification, labeling and packaging of substances and mixtures. To this end, Annex I of the Dangerous Substances Directive is amended in particular.
In addition, the new directive aims to clarify and simplify certain provisions while enhancing their effectiveness. Consequently, the aforementioned Directive 96/82/EC is repealed with effect from June 1, 2015.
